ARES is a game that almost did not see the daylight as the game concept was rejected several times by the team as we thought there were too many shoot-them-up games on the market. It would be challenging to make a shoot-them-up that can differentiate itself from the rest in the market. After many discussions, we finally gave the green light to go ahead with the development and took the gamble. However, the first release was shelved because we could not find a suitable device that could show the best of the game. Fortunately, with the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge and the K700i with its MIDP 2.0 capability, we decided to give the game another shot. With the new Sony Ericsson K700, ARES immediately came to life and was pushing the device to the maximum. We are happy with the outcome; the game was resurrected by the new Sony Ericsson terminals.What was the biggest challenge when developing for the competition?
The biggest challenge that we faced was to optimize the codes and graphics to less than 100K without compromizing the game-play. In fact, we have spent a lot of the development time to overcome this difficulty. What was the best part of the competition?
We would like to thank the organizer for their creativity in that consumers were able to play and vote for the game of their choice online. This resulted in a level playing-field for all games in the competition. In addition, our team was so excited when we went into the final 20. It has been a great boost to company morale as it was our first contest. Being one of the winners, it is really like a dream come true for all of us. We have learnt from the competition that no dream is too big for us if we put in hard work to achieve it.
